Mr. Ralph T. was admitted to The Chateau at Brooklyn Rehabilitation Center after taking a fall at home and breaking his ankle. It was a bad break and the doctors recommended that he have surgery to give him a better chance of fully recovering. Prior to falling, Ralph was living at home with his brother and was able to take care of all his needs independently. He was hoping to get back to his old self and was told that a few weeks in rehabilitation would help. Since he was previously a resident at The Chateau, he decided to come back here and work together with the staff that he knew and loved to start walking again.

Ralph was admitted to The Chateau on a Friday afternoon and was happy to be greeted by the friendly staff members. While being evaluated by the therapists, Ralph was unable to put any weight on his ankle and couldn’t walk. He was also unable to take care of any of his activities of daily living such as getting dressed without assistance. The therapists explained to Ralph that if he followed their rigorous plan for therapy, he would be able to leave fully independent. Ralph became concerned about walking up the many stairs he had in his home. It became our goal to erase this concern.

Within a few weeks Ralph was able to start seeing major improvements in his condition. Although he was still unable to walk on his own just yet, he was now able to take care of his ADLs on his own thanks to his Occupational Therapist Genie, and started to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Working together with his Physical Therapist, Dee, Ralph gained the encouragement he needed to keep pushing himself a little further each day. As soon as the Orthopedic Surgeon took off the cast, Ralph and Dee went into overdrive to be able to start walking on his own. As each day progressed, he started seeing more and more improvement and was getting very excited to be able to go back home to his family. By the time Ralph was going home he was independent, he was able to walk on his own and had no problem managing steps which made him very happy.

Prior to being discharged Ralph sat down with the Director of Concierge Services to express his gratitude for all that was done for him while he was at The Chateau.

“This has not been my first stay at a rehab center, but it has definitely been my most positive experience. When I came in here I was very down and sad, I had broken my ankle and was scared that my life would never be the same. From the minute I was brought in the staff made me so comfortable, they took care of all my needs and did it with sensitivity. My therapists were amazing and the nursing staff on the floors went above and beyond to make sure my every need was taken care of. The recreation team is great and was able to keep me involved in activities so that I shouldn’t be bored. I was especially surprised to have a Super Bowl party with some of my friends here, which really made me feel like I was at home. I will be forever grateful to all of the amazing men and women of The Chateau”.

On March 23, Ralph was discharged back home to be able to spend time with his wonderful family. The staff at The Chateau were amazed to see how well he had done while on therapy, and how far he had come from not being able to walk when he came in and then now being able to walk out the front door as if nothing had ever happened. Everyone wished Ralph the best and told him that he must come back to visit every once in a while to bring back his warm smile to our community, a promise which we hope he will fulfill.
