Details of Experience:
Joan is a 62-year-old female from Brooklyn, New York, who was admitted to The Chateau Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a fall at home. She slipped out of bed and remained on the floor for approximately 36 hours, unable to get up due to significant weakness. This weakness was related to a complicated medical history, including prior removal of abdominal muscles, which significantly affected her core strength and mobility. Although Joan had experienced multiple hospitalizations in the past, this was her first time in a nursing and rehabilitation facility.
Upon admission, Joan required assistance with mobility and daily activities. Emotionally, this transition was difficult, as she had always been independent and found it challenging to rely on others. She was worried about whether she would be able to return to her previous level of functioning. From the beginning, Joan described The Chateau as friendly, warm, and empathetic. During periods of emotional difficulty related to the loss of independence, Ms. Brown and the rest of the care team provided steady encouragement and reassurance, helping Joan remain motivated as she adjusted to her new circumstances.
Joan actively participated in physical and occupational therapy. By day three, she was already bearing weight as a result of focused leg-strengthening exercises, and by one week into her stay, she was able to go up two stairs. As her strength improved, she was given greater independence in the therapy gym. A defining moment in her recovery occurred when she was challenged to complete 20 squats. Reaching this goal helped Joan realize how far she had come and made her believe that a full recovery was truly possible. Following this milestone, the therapy team continued to challenge her appropriately, and Joan successfully met each new goal, further reinforcing her confidence. She described the physical and occupational therapy teams as top-notch and found motivation not only in her own progress but also in seeing the progress of other residents.
Joan also appreciated the strong sense of community at The Chateau. She enjoys interacting with others and uplifting those around her, and feels there was consistent social interaction and positive energy throughout the day. Activities such as animal visits, including a visit from small horses, were part of the facility’s ongoing efforts to keep residents engaged and in good spirits. By the end of her short-term rehabilitation stay, Joan made meaningful physical and emotional gains. She improved her strength and mobility, regained confidence, and moved closer to returning to her prior level of independence. Her experience at The Chateau supported her recovery in a positive and comprehensive way.
