Mr. Darnell Clarke’s journey at The Chateau began back in September of 2018 after complications with his diabetes diagnosis. Upon arrival at The Chateau, Mr. Clarke was happy to be greeted warmly by the staff and made comfortable in his new environment. However, after a week of being at The Chateau, his wounds were not healing well and the doctors recommended that he go back to the surgeon for a follow-up to make sure everything was alright.

Unfortunately, the doctor said all wasn’t well and he would need to have his leg amputated below the knee. He came back to The Chateau in pretty bad spirits but was greeted by the concierge who got him in touch with Dennis and Todd from our amputee program who gave him comfort knowing that he would be able to be independent again.

Mr. Clarke was sent to the hospital with well wishes at the end of October to have his leg amputated. Once he was healed up and ready for discharge, he informed everybody at the hospital that he only wanted to come back to The Chateau – where he knew he would get to where he needed to be physically and mentally.

When he arrived back, the nursing team checked out his new wound and was happy to see how nicely it was healing. As soon he got the approval from the doctor he was back in the gym, stretching his upper leg muscles so he would be able to work well with is prosthetic leg once it arrived. After a few tries with the prosthesis, his new leg fit well and he was given the go-ahead to start walking with it. Within a few short weeks, Darnell was able to walk on his prosthetic leg and was on the road to being fully independent.

Prior to being discharged, Darnel sat down with the staff to express his gratitude for all that they have done for him, stating,

“When this ordeal started I thought it was going to end a nightmare and I would never have my life back. However, after all the ups and downs with my health, I am finally able to walk and be independent again. It was not an easy journey but thanks to the help of all my therapists and staff here I feel very confident going home to my wife and getting our life back on track. Although at times I thought I couldn’t push myself anymore the staff was always there for me and for that I will be forever grateful.”

Darnell was discharged to his home on February 1st, knowing that he had his independence back. Our therapists, trained by our special amputee program, had him walking with a cane and even climbing steps so that he would be able to go wherever he wanted to go.

The staff was so happy to see Darnel leaving on his own two feet and were so proud to see a man who came in on a stretcher depressed leaving on his own two feet with a huge smile on his face. We wish Mr. Clarke nothing but the best and hope that he continues to live life to the fullest.

Ms. Mary Peters began her journey at The Chateau at Brooklyn Rehabilitation Center in mid-November 2018. Prior to arriving to The Chateau, she spent a few days in the hospital after going to her doctor and seeking consult. The doctor shared with Ms. Peters that additional tests are to be run in efforts of properly diagnosing her lower extremities.

When she arrived at the emergency room, she was informed that she had developed gangrene on her toes and many would have to be amputated. Although she was very upset about the decision, she made up her mind that this would not set her back and she would continue to be the woman that she was prior to the surgery!

After recovering for a few days, she was soon to be discharged from the hospital and would be in need of rehabilitation before returning home. When doing some research online, her daughter read about The Chateau and decided that it would be a perfect place for her mother to rehabilitate, both physically and mentally.

Upon arriving at The Chateau, Mary was very happy to see how lovely the building looked and how pleasant the environment was. Mary was so happy to enter a quiet, peaceful place. She knew that The Chateau was the best place for her to rejuvenate.

As always, our staff were very kind and welcoming to Mary, and explained her the process that they would use to ensure that she would achieve her maximum rehabilitation outcome.

Beginning on day one, she was working with her therapists to get her balance back. Mary had to adapt to walking with her missing toes. Although it was challenging at first, she continued to work diligently. Mary was seeing improvement and was very optimistic about reaching her goals. After four weeks of rehabilitation, Mary gained the confidence to plan her discharge. She was grateful to get the help of the social workers who made sure everything was set up for a safe discharge home!

Prior to leaving The Chateau, Mary sat with the staff to express her appreciation for all that was done for her while residing here. Everything including the rehabilitation, nursing, food, and cleanliness exceeded her expectations and she was happy to be going home sooner than she originally expected. We at The Chateau were happy to get Mary back on her feet again and wish her nothing but the best in the new year ahead!

How did this patient hear about The Chateau at Brooklyn Rehabilitation & Nursing Center? A social worker at the hospital

Mr. E. Calame entered The Chateau at Brooklyn Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in August 2018 after a stay at Maimonides Hospital following a car accident. Mr. Calame is a young man who arrived to the hospital, not sure if he would ever walk again. He had broken his pelvis and some parts of his spine, but was lucky to not be paralyzed. The doctors weren’t sure what level of independence he would be able to get back to, but they told him that if went to a good rehabilitation center, there would be hope for him to someday walk again. He spoke to the social workers at the hospital and they recommended that he come to The Chateau, where previous patients of theirs were rehabilitated from similar post traumatic situations. After sending his family to take a tour, he was very happy to hear what they reported to him and then decided to come to our community for rehabilitation.

Upon admission to The Chateau, Mr. Calame was greeted by the staff who tried to make him comfortable and reassured him that everything would be okay. Although he was very nervous, he tried to keep a positive outlook and focus. When he arrived, he was all bandaged up and had a pelvic external fixator in place to make sure that all his bones would stay properly heal. This made him a little uncomfortable; however, the staff did whatever they could to keep him happy and calm. When the rehabilitation team first met Mr. Calame, he was unable to move or do anything on his own, his needs were all taken care of by the staff. Although he was unable to move from the bed, the therapists started working with him to slowly get his process started. He knew it would take time but he was willing to do whatever it took to become independent again.

Once the fixator was removed and Mr. Calame got the “okay” to start participating in full rehabilitation services from his doctor, he hit the floor running and woke up bright and early every morning to get to the gym. From not being able to put any weight on his lower limbs to slowly being able to stand and then walk on the parallel bars, every day he was making small improvements and starting to see that there was a light at the end of the tunnel. As the weeks went on, he was seeing major improvements and was soon walking with a walker with minimal assistance and then started walking without any devices at all.

Prior to his discharge, Mr. Calame sat with the staff to discuss how grateful he was for all of the wonderful care he received as a resident here.

Mr. Calame stated, “After my car accident I thought my life was going to be over. I was taken straight to the hospital where they told me that I broke many bones and weren’t sure if I would ever be able to walk again. However after a few weeks there I healed up enough for them to want to send me out. They told me to try The Chateau since they heard great things about it and said if anyone could help me it would be them. I must say that I was very nervous going to a rehab center since I’m a young and have never been to one before. However, from the moment I arrived I knew everything would be alright the staff that greeted me were so nice and kept reassuring me that all would be good in the end. From my first day working with the rehab when I couldn’t even wiggle my toes till the day that I left walking on my own two feet everyone was so patient and respectful and let me heal at my own pace. While there I also loved getting involved with the activities which kept me entertained at all times. My family was very grateful for the free chauffeur service that picked them up daily to visit me and brought them home when they were done. Although I arrived with very low expectations I left with so much respect for The Chateau and for what they do for their patients. Thanks to them I am able to walk again independently and without any devices which is something I never thought would be possible. I would highly recommend this facility to anyone who is in need of getting fully rehabilitated.”

In November of 2018, Mr. Calame was discharged home with his family and friends. He was walking independently on his own two feet! His whole family came to escort him home and his mother was beyond grateful that she brought gift baskets for all the staff that helped. The team was so proud to have been involved in his journey and told him that he must come back to visit when he gets some time!

How did this patient hear about The Chateau at Brooklyn Rehabilitation & Nursing Center? Resident volunteered here previously.

Ms. Elaine T. was a patient at The Chateau after a short stay in the hospital due to pneumonia. Prior to beginning her journey at The Chateau, Elaine was a very energetic and independent person. However, after contracting pneumonia, she was very weak and was worried that she would not be safe at home. While at the hospital, she sat with the social workers who recommended that should gain more strength before returning home. Since she was a volunteer at The Chateau a few years prior and knew the wonderful outcomes of the patients here, she decided she would come here for rehabilitation!

When Elaine arrived at The Chateau, she was warmly greeted by all the staff. The staff who recognized her were so happy to see her! Everyone assured Elaine that she would receive all the care she would need to be able to return home!

As the days went by, she began seeing improvement and was ecstatic with the progress she was making. Although some days were harder than others, she always made time for her therapists to ensure that she would go home as soon as she was ready and able.

After a few weeks of rehabilitation, the staff felt comfortable sending her home for a home site visit. Her therapy team was overjoyed to witness the significant improvement she had made in such a short span of time. At the time of discharge, she was fully independent with a rolling walker and was already looking forward to coming back to The Chateau for visits and volunteer work.

Prior to her discharge home, Elaine sat with the staff to express her gratitude, stating, “when I used to come and volunteer I only witnessed the great work the staff was doing as an outsider. However, after being a patient, I was able to experience firsthand how amazing the staff truly is and how they turned my life back on track so that I continue doing what I love. I will be forever grateful for their work and can’t wait to come back again to spend time with this wonderful group.”

The staff were all so happy for her and we cannot wait to see her again very soon as a visitor!

Mr. Artie Frank was a resident at The Chateau at Brooklyn Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for a few weeks. He was welcomed into The Chateau after having a total knee replacement and being informed by his doctor that the best thing for his recovery would be to acquire therapy services before going back home again. Since he lived close to The Chateau and had heard great things from his friends about us, he decided to try out The Chateau and was happy to have made that decision.

When Artie was admitted to The Chateau, he was in much pain, but was motivated to get back to his normal independent life. Prior to the surgery, Artie was able to walk and get around by himself; however, everything that he did caused him a lot of pain and he was not happy to live that way. After talking to his doctor, they decided replacing his knee would be the best idea and if he participated well in rehab, he would be able to do everything he enjoyed without any pain. The doctor completed the surgery and wanted him to take his time with therapy to regain all the muscle strength he would need to get up and out again.

While staying at The Chateau, Artie was very happy to be receiving his therapy and also had a wonderful time while out of the gym. He made many friends and was always seen on the floors socializing with the other residents. He enjoyed spending time on the outside patio and getting involved with the recreation department’s activities as well. When he was in the gym, he worked diligently with his therapist and was seeing small progress every day. After a few weeks, he was up and walking with a cane and was starting to see that his pain levels were going down and he would be on his way soon.

Prior to his discharge home, Artie sat and spoke to the staff at The Chateau and let them know about how much he enjoyed his stay. He was so thankful for the way the staff took care of him and was ecstatic to be walking again with less pain all while on his way to complete independence. The team was happy for him and wanted him to know that if he ever needed anything, he is always welcomed to come back and talk to the staff. We wish Artie only the best and hope that he keeps his positive energy going!

Ms. Anita Trachtman, a wonderful woman, who lives in Brooklyn is a very active woman that loved her independence and taking care of all her needs even at her age. Unfortunately, while driving home from shopping one evening, she was involved in a terrible car accident and that changed everything very quickly. While she was happy to have survived the accident and still be alive, she was in a great deal of pain and was in the need of a rehabilitation center to get her back to her original status. While at the hospital, she spoke to the social workers and told them that she wanted to go to The Chateau. They told her she would do very well there.

When she was discharged from the hospital and arrived at The Chateau, it was apparent that she needed the proper rehabilitation care. Both her legs broken, she had a few broken ribs that were causing her a lot of pain, and she had to wear a neck brace.

She was very uncomfortable and was happy when she was greeted by the concierge who told her that everything would go well for her and guaranteed her that she would be going home happy. Although she was unable to walk, and the doctors didn’t allow her to put any weight on her legs, she started working with the rehabilitation team immediately and was slowly but surely seeing improvement.

At first, she was happy to be able to sit up in bed on her own. She then began keeping score of all her milestones, whether it was being able to transfer to her chair alone, or the day her doctor allowed her to get up out of the chair and try taking a few steps. Each improvement made her so happy and she was so grateful to all the staff for helping her reach each goal.

After a few months of hard work and dedication, the staff started working on discharge plans for Anita. Anita was very happy to be going home and sat down to speak with the staff about her stay.

Anita stated, “my stay at The Chateau has been wonderful, all of the staff took wonderful care of me and made sure my every need was met. When I had some private family issues going on the staff went above and beyond to help me out and ensure that everything was done respectfully and properly. I will be forever grateful for the wonderful care that I got here and will make sure to come back and visit the amazing people here.”

We at The Chateau are so happy to have seen Anita go home walking by herself and being able to take care of everything independently. It was a long and hard journey but to see her at the end of it back to her original self, makes it all worth it. Although adapting back to life at home will be tough at first, the staff let her know she can always reach out for assistance and help with anything that she might need. We are confident that she will do well getting back to the life she lived prior to the accident!

How did this patient hear about The Chateau at Brooklyn Rehabilitation & Nursing Center? Online Research

Mr. Jesus R. was admitted to The Chateau at Brooklyn after suffering a stroke at home and losing his ability to care for himself the way he used to. Prior to his stroke, he was fully independent and was able to take care of all his needs without any assistance. However, after suffering the stroke, he lost his ability to walk and the ability to do the things that he was doing prior. Jesus was looking for a residency to and get the necessary rehabilitation to get back to himself.

After looking at a few different communities in the neighborhood, he decided to pick The Chateau due to the amazing reviews that he heard, as well as the great report from a friend that visited the facility while he was in the hospital. Jesus decided to come to The Chateau to get the necessary rehab to get back to himself.

Upon admission to The Chateau, Jesus was in bad shape and was in desperate need of the rehabilitation services offered here. He was unable to walk and needed assistance in taking care of his basic activities of daily living. While he was very motivated to get better, the encouragement that he received from the staff gave him the extra push to hit the floor running, working hard in therapy. When he first began in the gym, every exercise took a lot of time to complete and drained him of his energy.

The staff told him not to get discouraged. They explained that at first everything will seem hard, but once he starts to work every day, he slowly but surely will see the improvements that he is looking for. He agreed to keep pushing. Jesus was a little hesitant after seeing how much effort he was putting into his workouts all while having slow results.

After a few weeks of therapy, his mindset changed as he was seeing the improvements that he was looking for. Jesus began thanking the staff for believing in him. Prior to being discharged, he sat down to speak with the staff to express his gratitude.

“When I came to the chateau I was in a very bad state, I had suffered a stroke and was scared to think that I wouldn’t be able to get back to life as I was used to before the stroke. I loved my independence and was worried that I would never get that back. However, after a few weeks of rehabilitation, my whole outlook changed. The staff all treated me so well and made sure that my every need was met. When I told the therapists what my expectations were for rehabilitation and what I would need to relearn to go home, they promised me that I would be able to do everything necessary before being discharged; and boy were they right. I am now fully independent and even able to walk stairs without assistance. I will be forever grateful for the amazing work that the staff here has done and recommend the chateau to anyone looking for a wonderful environment to heal in.”

The staff at The Chateau were all excited for Jesus to go home and wished him luck on getting everything back together at home. We know that it has been a long journey, but we are very excited for it to be coming to an end and hope that everything will continue going well for Jesus.

How did this patient hear about The Chateau at Brooklyn Rehabilitation & Nursing Center? Social Worker at SUNY.

Anne was admitted to The Chateau at Brooklyn Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after an unfortunate circumstance resulting in her breaking her femur while residing at home at her home. She was living alone prior to her fracture and wanted to be able to continue living independently. Surgery was performed to repair her femur during her stay in the hospital. Post-surgery rehabilitation would be needed in order to obtain her independent lifestyle again.

Anne wanted to pick a rehabilitation community that was close to her house and that would also have the capabilities of helping her reach her goals. After speaking with the social workers at the hospital, they recommended that she transfer to a location that she will be very happy rehabilitating at, The Chateau at Brooklyn Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

Upon arrival at The Chateau, Anne was very nervous about how her stay would go. She was never in a rehabilitation community before and wasn’t sure what to expect. Anne soon met the staff members who explained to her the process of how things would go and explained that everything would be fine.
Anne became calmer and was looking forward to starting her therapy. Before beginning therapy, Anne was unable to walk on her own and needed assistance to transfer from standing to sitting. A concern that Anne had was that she would need to be able to walk the steps that she had in her house. The staff insisted that Anne will be prepared on the day of her discharge.

As soon as Anne began working in the gym, she became a new person. She was excited about seeing such great results and started looking forward to her discharge. After working consistently with her therapists for a few weeks, Anne was able to walk on her own without any assistance or devices and was able to climb the steps independently as well. When she reached all her milestones and goals, the staff were happy to help set up her discharge.

After three weeks of hard work, Anne was able to go home and continue living life as she once did before her fall. The staff at The Chateau were happy to see her walk out on her own and one staff member mistook her for a visitor and asked her to sign out from the guest book. That made Anne smile, “I came as a patient and left as a visitor and friend.”

From all of us at The Chateau, we wish Anne much luck and we are excited for her to back to living comfortably in her home!

Ms. Linda Williams was admitted to The Chateau at Brooklyn Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in April of 2018. Prior to arriving at The Chateau, Linda was a resident at another rehab center in New Jersey trying to recover from heart complications, which made her unable to walk. She was very unhappy with the care she was receiving in that facility; and after speaking with her siblings who live in New York and have been residents at The Chateau, she decided to transfer herself to The Chateau in order to continue her road to recovery in a positive environment.

Upon arrival at The Chateau, Linda was excited to see a complete turnaround in her care and therapy treatments. She came to The Chateau unable to get out of bed or walk, and she had major difficulties taking care of her activities of daily living. She started working with her therapist, Eugene, to be able to get back to her independent self. After spending some time in therapy, she was seeing remarkable progress in her ability to walk and her ability to take care of herself. After only a few weeks she was already walking with a walker and able to get out of bed without assistance. She was also able to dress herself and take care of her ADLs on her own.

Aside from the therapy, Linda has been so happy with her entire experience at The Chateau. She took a few minutes to sit down with the staff and expressed her gratitude to everyone. Linda said, “The Chateau is a superior state-of-the-art facility. All of the staff members are compassionate, caring and go above and beyond to take care of their patient. The therapy department helped motivate me and got me walking and eating without the need of assistance. I loved the fact that my physical therapist was a doctor in his country before coming to America; it made him so much more knowledgeable. There is a great management team that helps keep the staff motivated and constantly on their toes. All in all, I am so happy to have made the decision to come to The Chateau because if I was still in the facility in New Jersey I doubt I would be able to do all the things that I am doing now.”

The staff at The Chateau is very excited in anticipation for Linda’s discharge home and are working together with her to make sure everything goes smoothly. Everyone at The Chateau will miss Linda’s smile in the lobby, but we are happy knowing that the work that the staff did with her has helped her achieve her goal of going back to her independent life.
